Muso City has partnered with music organisation CI 100 Club and the Christmas Island Tourism Association to create the Crabbest Song Competition 2014. The competition will give both Christmas Island's budding musicians, as well as musicians across the country, the chance to win gear from Muso City's extensive catalogue of music equipment and accessories. The competition will be split into two separate opportunities to win. The first will be a song writing competition open to all residents of Christmas Island where the prize pool includes close to $3000 worth of music gear. Then a second will be a national competition where entrants are required to make a 60 second audio piece to accompany video footage from Australian Geographic that showcases some of the amazing landscape and wildlife on the island. The island-based competition aims to encourage school kids and teens to explore the joy of making music and develop music and production skills. The CI 100 Club was formed in 2012 to bring quality live music acts to Christmas Island and develop the local music scene. The not-for-profit organisation will be holding a major festival every 6 months with all funds raised going towards future gigs, equipment and their scholarship program. By partnering with Muso City and PreSonus, they are able to offer a $3000 prize pool including Acoustic Guitars, a Synth Hand Drum, Recording Software and a variety of guitar, vocal and percussion packages for each of the category winners. CI 100 Club Director, Simon Pope, said he was very pleased to have support from Muso City. "Getting the kids excited about music makes a huge difference to their lives, and having great prizes like this up for grabs will certainly encourage more entrants," Mr Pope said. The national competition will give entrants the chance to win a Timberidge Mini Acoustic Travel Guitar worth $699. Musicians are invited to enter by creating a 60 second piece of music that will accompany the Australian Geographic video footage that features some of the amazing landscape and wildlife the island has to offer. Entries can be emailed to Simon at ci100club@patmac.net.au View the Terms and Conditions of the Competition at : http://www.musocity.com.au/crabbest-song-competitions-terms-and-conditions Entries close January 31st 2014.

The island has the greatest land area of any coral atoll in the world: about 322 square kilometres (124 sq mi); its lagoon is about the same size. The atoll is about 150 km (93 mi) in perimeter, while the lagoon shoreline extends for over 48 km (30 mi). Christmas Island comprises over 70% of the total land area of Kiribati, a country encompassing 33 Pacific atolls and islands. Kiritimati Island (Christmas) is well known for its world class bone fishing.[4] It also has excellent birdwatching and surfing opportunities.[5] It lies 232 km (144 mi) north of the Equator, 6,700 km (4,200 mi) from Sydney, and 5,360 km (3,330 mi) from San Francisco. Christmas Island is in the world's farthest forward time zone, UTC+14, and Christmas Island is one of the first inhabited places on Earth to experience the New Year each year (see also Caroline Atoll, Kiribati). Despite being 2,460 km (1,530 mi) east of the 180 meridian, a 1995 realignment of the International Dateline by the Republic of Kiribati "moved" Christmas Island to west of the dateline. Nuclear tests were conducted in the region around Christmas Island by the United Kingdom in the late 1950s, and by the United States in 1962. During these tests islanders were not evacuated. Subsequently British, New Zealand, and Fijian servicemen as well as local islanders have claimed to have suffered from exposure to the radiation from these blasts. The entire island is a Wildlife Sanctuary; access to five particularly sensitive areas (see below) is restricted. The name "Kiritimati" is a rather straightforward respelling of the English word "Christmas" in Gilbertese, in which the combination ti is pronounced s, and the name is thus pronounced [kəˈrɪsməs]. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiritimati Directed and Edited by Wojciech Hupert Music: Flowers of Kava for any questions and enquiries, please contact me via twitter: @wojciechhupert

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Kiribati is the only nation in all 4 hemispheres of the world (North, South, East and West). While the country’s land area is a mere 811 km2 (33 islands) it has an Exclusive Economic Zone of 3,441,810 km2 making it 4,243X larger! Thus, while the country is only the 187th largest in the world, its EEZ is slightly larger than all of India! 2. Kiribati has a (less famous) Christmas Island. On a map, you’ll find it marked as Kiritimati, but this is only a respelling of the word Christmas. In the Kiribati language, the combination ti is pronounced s. The island is home to only 4 villages, 3 of which are called London, Banana and Poland, and comprises over 70% of Kiribati’s total land area. 3. Most of the islands and atolls are only 1-2 metres above sea level, with the highest point just 81 m above sea level. Two small uninhabited islets, Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea, already disappeared below the sea in 1999. To counter the very real risk of the entire country disappearing beneath the waves within the next 50 years, Kiribati bought 20 km2 of land from Fiji where they can start relocating people. 4. There are no land animals that are native to Kiribati, although early settlers brought dogs and pigs with them. The waters surrounding Kiribati, however, are teaming with fish, seahorses, crabs, jellyfish, sharks, wales and dolphins, plus many more. 5. Kiribati is not the most known country in the world, but you might have heard of the Gilbert Islands. It used to be a British colony until 1979. The name is the local enunciation of Gilberts. 6. There is no rail, river, or lake transport, although canoes travel freely on the lagoons. However, all the major islands have airstrips. 7. South Tarawa is the capital and hub of the Republic of Kiribati and home to approximately half of Kiribati's total population. The island is extremely vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. Already the effects of rising sea-levels and associated soil salinization are starting to threaten limited fresh water supplies. Households on South Tarawa do not have the option to retreat from coastal erosion, as the atoll is narrow and already crowded. This year, in order to end the present year on a cheerful note and make way for a fresh and bright New Year, the Municipal District of Fira Town in cooperation with the Municipality of Santorini/ Thira, the Province of Santorini/ Thira and the sponsors has organized grand celebrations from 20/12/2014 to 10/01/2015. The highlight is the Christmas Village –set up in the centre of Fira Town, in the parking lot opposite the Tax Office and the Museum – which is meant to give locals and especially children who cannot travel to urban centers in Greece or abroad the chance to feel the festive atmosphere. Furthermore, the purpose of the events is to make visitors feel more welcome by eliminating the inhospitable image of Santorini with the closed stores and solitude in winter, as well as to send the message worldwide that Santorini has a pounding heart all year round. The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It is located 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) northwest of the Western Australian city of Perth, 360 km (220 mi) south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and 975 km (606 mi) ENE of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. It has a population of 1,403 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite. The island's geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism among its flora and fauna, which is of significant interest to scientists and naturalists. 63% of its 135 square kilometres (52 sq mi) is an Australian national park. There exist large areas of primary monsoonal forest. Phosphate, deposited originally as dead marine organisms (not guano as often thought), has been mined on the island for many years. The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It is located 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) northwest of the Western Australian city of Perth, 500 km (310 mi) south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and 975 km (606 mi) ENE of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. It has a population of 1,403 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite. The islands geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism amongst its flora and fauna, which is of significant interest to scientists and naturalists. Phosphate, deposited as guano, has been mined on the island for many years. 63% of its 135 square kilometres (52 sq mi) is an Australian national park. There exist large areas of primary rainforest. At Australia's request, the United Kingdom transferred sovereignty to Australia; in 1957, the Australian government paid the government of Singapore £2.9 million in compensation, a figure based mainly on an estimated value of the phosphate forgone by Singapore. The first Australian Official Representative arrived in 1958 and was replaced by an Administrator in 1968. Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands together are called the Australian Indian Ocean Territories and since 1997 share a single Administrator resident on Christmas Island. As of 2006, the estimated population is 1,493. (The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports a population of 1,508 as of the 2001 Census.) The ethnic composition is 70% Chinese (mainly Hokkien), 20% European and 10% Malay. Religions practised on Christmas Island include Buddhism 75%, Christianity 12%, Islam 10% and others 3%. English is the official language, but Hokkien and Malay are also spoken. English, Malay and Hokkien are lingua franca. From the late 1980s and early 1990s, boats carrying asylum seekers and mainly departing from Indonesia landed on the island. During 2001, a large number of mostly Middle Eastern persons landed with the intent to apply for asylum in Australia. In 2001, Christmas Island was the site of the so-called "Tampa" controversy, in which the Australian government stopped a Norwegian ship, MV Tampa, from disembarking 438 rescued asylum seekers at Christmas Island. The ensuing standoff and the associated political reactions in Australia were a major issue in the 2001 Australian federal election. Another boatload of asylum seekers was taken from Christmas Island to Papua New Guinea for processing, after it was claimed that many of the adult asylum seekers threw their children into the water, apparently in protest at being turned away. This was later proven to be false. Many of the refugees were subsequently accepted by New Zealand. The former Howard Government later secured the passage of legislation through the Australian Parliament which excised Christmas Island from Australia's migration zone, meaning that asylum seekers arriving on Christmas Island could not automatically apply to the Australian government for refugee status. This allowed the Royal Australian Navy to relocate them to other countries (Papua New Guinea's Manus Island, and Nauru) as part of the so-called Pacific Solution. In 2007 the Department of Immigration finished construction of an "Immigration Detention Centre", containing approximately 800 beds. Originally estimated to cost $210 million, the final cost was over $400 million. In 2007, the Rudd Government announced plans to decommission the Manus Island and Nauru centres; processing would then occur on Christmas Island itself.
